About the event
Women of Toledo celebrates National Women’s Equality Day on the 26th of August in recognition of the 19th Amendment that culminated a 72-year, peaceful campaign that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Even though the 19th Amendment extended the voting rights to women, only white women were allowed to exercise voting. Women have various barriers based on their intersectional identities, which is why it is essential for women in Greater Toledo to discuss gender-based oppression and how it intersects with other forms of discrimination. Gender identity, race, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, nationality, language, and religion are determinant factors in shaping women’s experiences. These experiences must be addressed and discussed to further understand women’s living conditions and how we can reach equality for all people.
With the support from various women’s groups and partners, Creating Waves of Change will be hosting a roundtable activity with 12 table topics surrounding women's issues on the National Women Equality Day, Thursday, August 26, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Secor Ballroom, Registry Bistro. Each table will be assigned one specific topic of women’s issues on how to prevent, intervene, and retain. The purpose of the table discussion is to engage with each other in a dialogue that increases our collective awareness of what is happening in women’s lives and what solutions and strategies we can create to enhance women’s rights in the United States.
