#HisStory with Eljay Knowles

I’ve always been curious about the world around me and enjoy learning about the people, places, and experiences that shape our lives. That curiosity has influenced many of my interests and experiences over the years.
My academic journey led me to Central State University, Ohio’s only public Historically Black College or University (HBCU), where I earned my bachelor’s degree in History. My studies broadened my understanding of different societies, cultures, and the events that have shaped our world.

Following college, I had the opportunity to live and teach English in China. Living abroad was a memorable experience that allowed me to immerse myself in a different culture, meet people from various backgrounds, and gain a greater appreciation for different ways of life. It remains a meaningful part of my life.
In August 2026, I joined Women of Toledo as the Program Coordinator for Economic Empowerment and Workforce Development. In this role, I help connect entrepreneurs and small business
owners with resources, mentorship, and opportunities to support their business growth.

One of the highlights of my time with Women of Toledo has been coordinating the Northwest Ohio Business Mentoring Program, which connects aspiring and established entrepreneurs with experienced mentors who can offer guidance, share their knowledge, and support them as they navigate their business journeys. On October 1, we hosted our Fall 2026 Kickoff, bringing together mentors and mentees for an evening of introductions, networking, and speed mentoring. We had a great turnout, and it was exciting to see participants connecting, sharing their experiences, and beginning to build relationships that will continue throughout the program.

Another memorable experience was participating in Women’s Equality Day, which provided an opportunity to engage with the organization’s mission and connect with other's in the Toledo community. The event highlighted the importance of recognizing women’s voices, experiences, and contributions while continuing to create opportunities for women to connect, grow, and support one another.

In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, watching movies and documentaries, and reading about a variety of subjects. I also enjoy discovering new places, learning new things, and exploring different perspectives.
I look forward to continuing to learn, connecting with others, and finding ways to contribute to the communities around me.
