My Summer Journey with Women of Toledo: A Story of Growth and Empowerment with LeadHERWay Fellow, Avalon Ayres

My journey this summer with Women of Toledo began during a transitional phase after my first year at George Washington University. Eager to broaden my horizons, I actively sought out opportunities for personal and professional skill development. When I discovered the LeadHerWay fellowship program with Women of Toledo, it offered the perfect opportunity.  I am truly grateful for the experiences I was offered and the memories I have made working alongside this remarkable group of women.

When I walked into the Women of Toledo’s office for orientation, I felt a wave of passion and energy. Everyone, from the permanent staff to the fellows, was respectful of all cultures and people regardless of their background and strived to make an environment welcoming to all. Learning more about Women of Toledo’s mission to engage, educate, and empower was a wonderful experience that taught me a great deal about service learning.

From learning PR management to mentoring young girls, my specific role within Women of Toledo was expansive. I engaged in an environment of passionate individuals who consistently went the extra mile for each other and the community. My daily activities consisted of feeding and mentoring GirlsHub members, engaging with media outlets in the community, managing and organizing client relations, creative marketing, and event planning. My role at this organization challenged and pushed me outside my comfort zone to practice interpersonal skills.

Beyond my personal experiences, witnessing the organization’s impact on young girls with the Girls Hub program and the greater Toledo area was the most fulfilling. On my last day, I had the privilege of seeing the girls I had mentored graduate from the program. As they faced their fears of public speaking, I was incredibly moved by their personal testimonials of growth. Witnessing these girls overcome challenges they never thought they could was a testament to the collective effort they contributed to the program and each other. The girls who participated in the program were driven, ambitious, and resilient young women and it was an honor to be able to work with them.

Moreover, I was inspired by the organization’s responsiveness to community needs. It was heartening to witness the staff rally around any peer in crisis, providing them with the resources and support needed to navigate difficult situations. The dedication of the staff to improving the lives of those within the community, regardless of the time or length they must go, is impressive.

In conclusion, as I prepare to return to another semester in DC, I can confidently say that  I achieved the exact goals I strived for with Women of Toledo this summer. I expanded my horizons and my professional experience, which will serve me well in future endeavors. Being a part of the Women of Toledo LeadHerWay summer program exposed me to challenges and experiences I could not have predicted. I eagerly look forward to seeing the girls I work with become community leaders. Finally, I am excited to watch Women of Toledo continue to make a meaningful difference in women's and girl's lives throughout our community.
